Power Windowz is a custom hardware-software system designed to simulate a real outdoor window experience in indoor or window-less environments. The solution combines an external camera, a monitor, and a compact control unit (mini-PC) to display either a live outdoor feed or curated looped video content enhanced with window frame overlays.


The system is controlled through a local web application and is capable of operating offline after initial setup. Power Windowz aims to recreate the psychological and visual benefits of a real window in spaces such as offices, basements, restaurants, and residential interiors.

The client set out to create a product that delivers the feeling of a real window where physical windows are not possible. The challenge was not just displaying video, but building a cohesive system that:

Supports both live camera feeds and long-duration looped videos

Solution

We designed a modular system where all core logic runs locally on a mini-PC connected directly to a display. The solution integrates hardware, backend services, and a web-based control interface into a single, self-contained ecosystem.
The mini-PC handles video playback, overlay rendering, and system logic, while users interact with the system through a browser-based web app available on any device within the same network.

Live Camera Streaming

The system ingests an RTSP video stream from an external camera and renders it directly on the monitor.

Looped Video Playback

Preloaded 8 – 10 hour video loops allow continuous playback without repetition artifacts, even when internet access is unavailable.

Window Overlay System

Transparent PNG overlays simulate different window styles and are composited over the video using alpha-channel rendering.

Perspective Simulation

Users can select viewing distance presets that simulate how far the “window” appears from the viewer.

Local Web App Control

A single-page web application allows users to switch modes, select videos, apply overlays, and adjust orientation – all without touching the display itself.

Mini-PC–Based Architecture

All backend services, playback logic, and UI control are hosted directly on the mini-PC connected to the monitor

Offline-First Operation

Once configured, the system continues operating without Wi-Fi. If the connection is lost, the current video finishes and restarts automatically

Web-Based UI (SPA)

The control interface runs in a browser and can be accessed from any phone or computer on the same network

Video Orientation Support

Both vertical and horizontal video formats are supported, with automatic filtering based on the selected orientation

Overlay Rendering Engine

Overlays are applied with fixed positioning using alpha-channel compositing, ensuring consistent alignment across all content
